Keeping Your Boat In Good Shape Will Keep You Fishing |
Not a day goes by that Skip Hollis doesn't get these kinds of calls. My motor won't run ... the bearing is burned up ... the battery is dead. Those are great business calls for Airport Marine but a bad call for you. So we got him to give us a list of the things you need to watch out for to keep your boat and motor in top shape ... sorry, we mean ship shape!
- Always use oils and lubricants that the products makers recommend. Some over-the-counter brands just can't hold up to 8000 RPMs.
- Use only 90 octane fuel or higher.
- Keep the prop free from nicks and bends so big bills can come only from a slight out of round blade.
- Service the gear case every year. Don't forget this is the part that is underwater all the time.
- The water pump is the lifeblood of your motor. Change the impeller every year. It's cheap and will make for years of life on the water.
- Most newer boats have built-in alarms that sound when the water temperature is too high or there is a problem in the motor. Most folks drive the boat back to the launch. DON'T. Take it to the dealer and do not crank the engine again.
- Keep fuel fresh and always top off the tank for winter. And check and change the fuel line and filters often.
- Bearings and seals are the life of your trailer. Change the bearings every two years and pack 'em every 6 months. It costs very little and to stand on the side of I-65 with a burned up hub is no fun.
- Start and keep a good maintenance program. The folks at the factory are in this with you. They don't want warranty work and you want to stay on the water.
- Many people fear oil injection but it's great. Keep all filters clean and use the right oil and enjoy. If you have any questions, give Skip a call at Airport Marine, 205-664-0407.
