Even the best turkey callers will find that their yelps and clucks just
won't bring that Tom in. Some will even hear the gobbling moving away
from their set-up.
Those hunters may want to try a different tactic - pursuing the turkey.
Hard-to-get gobblers will gobble in response to calls but may not want
to come to the call. That turkey may be enticed, but he is already with
a flock of hens.
In this situation a hunter can circle around the turkey, attempting to
get in front of him. If there is a field or area where you think that
gobbler is going, "Head him off at the pass." Hunters will have to use
a ridge or other terrain features to hide movement and quickly get set
up in the new spot.
This is a case where pre-season scouting is so important. Hunters have
to know the land they are hunting on and where the "hot spots" for turkeys
are.
If you are hunting with a partner, you may want to trick the turkey. The
shooter moves towards the turkey's position while the caller moves in
the opposite direction. When the gobbler hears the volume of the hen calls
becoming lighter he will think the hen has lost interest and is walking
away. He may move closer, while still keeping a distance, and walk right
into the shooter's sight.
