WEST POINT JUNE 2008May 30, 2008
WEST POINT LAKE IS FULL, CLEAR & 79 DEGREES BY CHRIS BRACKETT, HIGHLAND MARINA AND RESORT, 706 845 1004
Bass fishing this week is still on the slow side. The spots have been aggressive but they are only 8 to 12 inches. I have been throwing a ¼ ounce black Picasso shake up head with a 4" motor oil finesse worm. I'm fishing rocky ledges in 10 to 25 feet of water and mostly targeting windy areas, which lately hasn't been hard to find. Other good techniques to use right now is a wacky rig Zoom Trick Worm. Color doesn't seem any different so try your favorite one that you have confidence in. Fish this rig around blow-downs and other shallow bushes and grass. The jig bite has been slow but that's what I have been catching most of my quality fish on this week. I'm using a Blk/Blue 1/2oz Football Head called the Picasso Fantasy Jig. I am using a Netbait Paca Chunk trailer in the same color to match my jig. I am fishing this jig in the deep pockets with grass in them. Most of my bites come after I pull my jig loose from the grass in 7-12 feet of water.
Hybrid and striper fishing is still not great this week. I have been fishing lake wide and still haven't found them bunched up tight yet. Yesterday I caught 14 fish in the 5-7lb range on a Captain Mack’s Umbrella Rig. All of my jigs were rigged with a sassy shad trailer and were trolled between 16 & 25ft deep. All the fish I caught was in Wedhakee Creek right on the channel ledges. Down lining shad is working also but it's much more difficult to find the fish right now so that's why I switched to umbrella rigs.
Crappie fishing has been good mostly at night around the bridge columns. The best way to catch them is by putting out floating lights and using live minnows under them set at different depths. Yellow Jacket and 109 Bridge are the two most popular and seem to always do well.
