WEST POINT JUNE 2008WEST POINT LAKE IS FULL, CLEAR & 82 DEGREES BY CHRIS BRACKETT, HIGHLAND MARINA AND RESORT, 706 845 1004
Bass Fishing has been fair this week. Right now up lake is the place to go. Fish brush piles in 8 10ft of water with a 3/8 ounce Picasso Fantasy Jig or a Texas rigged Zoom Mag 2 worm. Good colors right now are dark pumpkins and greens. Jackson Creek and Sunny point have some good places fish are biting but just make sure to cover the water column. Down lake fishing is tougher because of the clear water conditions. Right now throw a ¼ ounce Shakey Head rigged with a finesse worm in your preferred color. Also throw a Carolina Rig in 15 to 22 feet on points and roadbeds. Also make sure to use a long fluorocarbon leader for more and bigger bits. Lucky Craft Pointer 78 are working also but the bits are slow . Most of the fish have been hitting on the pause after a retrieve, "Jerk,Jerk... Pause..etc" Make sure to throw multiple cast to one spot as fish are being picky.
Hybrid and striper fishing has been great even with the horrible heat fish are being caught lake wide. We have been catching most of our fish by down lining and free lining shad over 15 to 25 feet of water. The best thing to help you is to watch your graph and look for the schools. Tuesday we caught over 34 hybrids and 8 stripers one being at the 10 pound mark which is great for West Point. Average hybrid is 3 to 4 pounds with the occasional 5 to 7 pounder. Humps and points are my key spots right now but it changes daily. Big gizzards are working great just make sure you using a big enough hook, I like a 3/0 circle for shad 5 to 7 inches. Wedhakee Creek, Stroud Creek and some no named pockets down lake are great places to start.
Crappie fishing for crappie has stopped for the most part during the day. So crappie are being caught on small shad in 20 to 25 feet over brush piles. Most fish are being caught at night under lights around the bridges and rip rap lake wide. Use small minnows with a size 4 hook and 4lb Sufix line for best results. Good jig to use are Jiffy Jigs in White/White, Green/Black, and red/white. Don't if fishing gets tough add a minnow on the back of your jig for a little extra bits.
Catfish fishing is great. Good baits to use right now are cut shad, chicken liver, and big night crawlers. Fish these baits on the bottom in 25 30ft deep and look for the deeper holes. McGee Roadbed has been full of good sized channel cats feeding around the rocks on the bottom. Also you can catch fish around the bridge columns so just move around until you find them.
