LAKE LANIER IS DOWN 14 FEET, AND LAKE IS STAINED AND THE CREEKS AND THE RIVERS ARE STAINED & 84 DEGREES.
Largemouth bass fishing has been fair and the bass are surprisingly shallow all day. The overcast days and the cool rains seem to hold these fish in and around grass beds in the back of the creeks. Buzz baits and spinner baits are working even in the middle of the day. The fish are in the shallows are even biting up lake in the creeks coves after last weeks full moon. The bass will bite floating worms or lizards, spinner baits, stick baits, live lizards and top water lures. The Zoom trick worm in almost any color will get strikes and use light 8 pound Stren Magna Flex line on a spinning reel. One of the best hooks is the #2/0 Mustad. Cast the all the baits around any shallow wood or docks all over the lake. Even at mid day these bass will strike the baits and they are moving shallow all over the lake. Zoom’s white Super Fluke still works very well for all bass roaming the banks. Use a #4 Mustad hook and let the bass take the lure a foot before setting the hook. Bomber crank baits in baby bass, shad and fire tiger colors cast to the banks will get bite and the fish are relatively shallow at less than 10 feet. Use the stop and go technique and try running these crank baits in the blow downs. A slow retrieve in the trees letting the bait float up once it hits the limbs will draw a strike. A Stanley spinner bait in the 3/8 ounce size with white or chartreuse skirts cast to the points and trees will get the fish to attack this lure. Many small bass will strike first and work the same area for a bigger bass that are close by. Almost all styles of lizards and worms can get the strikes from these bass. Float these plastics with no weight and watch the line dart once the fish strikes. In the slightly stained water up lake, this is a deadly technique for shallow bass.
Spotted bass fishing is good and the fish are moving around looking for food. Spots are being caught off of wood of any sort on primary and secondary points. Pick some main lake humps too. Many of the fish have begun their migration into their summer patterns and holding areas. The spotted bass are being caught on a Zoom Super Fluke with a 3/0 Offset EWG Gamakatsu hook in the white pearl or any shad color, on a Zoom finesse worm rigged on a 3/16 ounce 2/0 Gamakatsu Round 26 jig head or Texas rigged with a 2/0 Gamakatsu hook and a 1/8 or 1/4 ounce bullet weight in the sand, watermelon, natural blue, smoke and purple, and smoke and blue colors, a Spro Down Minnow, and a Lucky Craft Pointer 78 or 100. Quite a few fish are starting to more heavily eat top water baits in the forms of a Spro Chug Minnow, a Lucky Craft Sammy 100 in any color, chug bait in any form of a Storm Chug Bug, and have started to more actively hit some crank baits, such as the Spro Prime Crank 25. The colors that are most reflective to imitate a shad or blue back herring forage have seemed to have been working the best. For fishing for spotted bass right now, try to focus on brush piles and wood on points and humps about the 23-25 foot mark.

Striper fishing is good and the fish are becoming easier to find on the south end of Lake Lanier. Check pockets in the main creek channels and off the main lake channel. I have found fish in water from 25 feet to 60 feet. Do not fish unless you see fish on your Lowrance. If you mark four or five fish at one time, stop and drop you lines just above where fish are holding. I have found that sometimes huge numbers of fish seem to come from nowhere, and it all starts from the four or five that you first mark. Fish for 15 to 20 minutes and if nothing happens, look for a new spot. There are still fish north of Gainesville Marina. They are smaller fish in the 5 to 7 pound range. You can catch these fish in good numbers using the umbrella rigs. I have good luck with 9 3/4 ounce jigs pulled 80 to 100 feet behind the boat. Again, if you are not seeking fish on your Lowrance as you are trolling, then try different areas. Remember the number one rule of fishing: DON'T FISH WHERE THERE ARE NO FISH!! Check out the site www.atlantafalcons.com and check out the Fishing with the Falcons and the Purple Heart Recipients from the Gulf War. You'll see lots of action and great times.
Crappie fishing is fair and how the bridges and live bait has been best. Might try a night fishing trip as it has begun to pick up around the bridge in the lake as well as a few lighted docks. Live bait is best day and night at 12 feet.
