The hunt of a lifetime.
As a young boy my father would load up my two brothers and myself.
We would go deer hunting in south Shelby County. These were the
most memorable times of my childhood.
As I became a young teen my dream hunt was to go to south Texas
and hunt on a big ranch.
Twenty-five years later I got that chance. One of my childhood friends
happens to be Ronnie Smith of Ronnie Smith’s great outdoor
adventures. Ronnie and my older brother, Jeff Davis, had come back
from an awesome trip they had taken with their sons to the King’s
Ranch in south Texas.
Man, was it a trip! I stopped by to see them the morning they got
back and there were 13 of the nicest bucks I’d seen in a while.
So I got Ronnie to book my wife, Connie, and my two sons, Conner,
10, and Rylee, 9, and myself a trip to the King’s Ranch in
south Texas. My boys were so excited they could hardly wait.
We got to Kingsville, Texas, the day before the hunt and they couldn’t
wait til daybreak the next morning. Thbe next morning the boys were
the first two up and ready to go. We got to the hunting area we
would be hunting right at daybreak. It was one awesome sunrise as
I looked into my sonss eyes. They were ready. This was their first
harvest ever.
We had seen a lot of deer where we hunt back home but had never
got the chance to take one. Conner was first. He was ready. We had
seen some smaller bucks but didn’t take them. We were waiting
on Big Boy.
One hour into the hunt this big nine point came into sight. Conner
got ready. He pulled his 243 up, held it steady and aimed it at
the big nine point. He shot and it dropped in its tracks. Conner
was so excited he could not believe he had bagged his first buck
ever. It was done.
Then it was Rylee’s turn. We moved to a different area. We
had been there 15 minutes and there he came . He was feeding in
a grove of trees and cactus bushes. Rylee pulled his 243 up, aimed
and fired. The big buck was down. Rylee’s was also a nine
point. He was so excited about his first buck ever. My boys were
so happy they had done it!
Before the day was over they had bagged two more big bucks. I had
not fired a shot. I had lived a childhood and life-long dream through
my two sons.
So what matters most is not how much money I can make or how many
pieces of equipment I can own or how many big jobs I can get. What
matters most is making a good living for my family and spending
the most quality time I can possibly spend with them. Cause let
me tell you something, dad’s and mom’s money can’t
buy what we saw in our sons’ eyes in south Texas. This will
be a memory of a lifetime for all of us. My wife and I will always
remember the first deer our boys took and the trip we took as a
family. What a week!!!
The family is what matters most!!!!
