II was
most fortunate to win this hunt by a drawing at Markıs on the occasion
of his annual Spring Fling when experts in various fields of outdoor sports
are in attendance. Theyıre there to give advice on turkey hunting, fishing
and, of course, quail hunting.
They talk about everything from tactics to suggestions for the appropriate
gear. After being notified of my win I was very excited. I got in touch
with Mr. Carl Dooley of the Sykes Place Plantation and we agreed on a
date and time of the hunt.
On March 13 my son, Tom, and I drove to Brooksville, MS, where we met
Mr. Dooley at the plantation lodge. I bought my Mississippi hunting license
(The cost was $13.00, which is good for the season.) and Mr. Dooley made
arrangements for transportation, dogs and light refreshments.
From the lodge we proceeded to the shooting fields, which were just a
short drive away. The plantation provides hunts by horseback, wagon, walking
and combinations of these. I chose walking with motorized vehicle, which
proved to be a good choice for me.
At the field Mr. Dooley released two finely trained pointers named Bama
and Lil Gal, and they eagerly went to work. Very shortly they were on
point and a most fun-filled afternoon hunt was underway! Birds were plentiful
and the olı eyes still proved to be somewhat accurate.
It was great to be so royally treated and in the company of a real gentleman
of the sport of quail hunting. Words can not express the joy I had on
this Mississippi afternoon! Thanks to Mr. Dooley and Mark for the opportunity
to have this experience after so many missed seasons.
